Choosing the Right Shingles for Oklahoma Weather
When it comes to roofing in Oklahoma, not all asphalt shingles are created equal. Tulsa's climate is uniquely demanding — hot summers, severe hailstorms, high winds, and occasional ice storms all take a toll on your roof. Choosing the right shingles upfront can mean the difference between a roof that lasts 15 years and one that lasts 30+.
Understanding Shingle Grades
Asphalt shingles come in three main grades: 3-tab (entry level), architectural/dimensional (mid-grade), and premium/designer (high end). For Oklahoma's climate, we generally recommend architectural shingles at minimum. They offer significantly better wind and impact resistance than 3-tab shingles at a modest price premium.
Impact Resistance Ratings
The most important rating for Oklahoma homeowners is the impact resistance class. Class 4 shingles — the highest rating — are tested to withstand 2-inch steel ball impacts without cracking. In hail-prone areas like Tulsa, Class 4 shingles can also qualify you for insurance discounts of 20–30% on your homeowner's policy premium.
Wind Resistance
Oklahoma regularly sees wind gusts exceeding 60 mph during severe thunderstorms. Look for shingles rated for at least 110 mph wind resistance. Premium shingles from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed offer wind warranties up to 130 mph when installed per manufacturer specifications.
